From Rita Ora’s fashion and beauty campaigns, to her role in Fifty Shades of Grey to her unique red carpet style, it’s hard to keep our eyes off the singer/actress/professional risk-taker. And one of the main reasons Ora’s got our attention? Her ever-changing hair! Ora’s pro Chris Appleton, the mane man behind her major bob moment, talked to PEOPLE about some of the singer’s most talked-about styles. When it comes to her creating her head-turning looks, he says, “it’s always a feeling we go with. We never have a long time to get ready. We have a discussion and then it’s like, ‘OK, we need to hurry up!'”

For the singer’s first Grammys in January 2014, the duo decided a “Marilyn Monroe” moment was in order. When Ora initially burst on the scene, “she was known for curls, but since she can pull off so many looks, from cool to glam, we created this sophisticated [version],” explains Appleton.
Another homage to Old Hollywood came nearly three months later at the MTV Movie Awards, where the star, fresh from Coachella, traded cornrows for loose curls. Says Appleton, “This was a real hot moment, just beautiful. At Coachella we’d done braids with waves gelled onto her face. Then we drove to L.A. and I saw the dress and she said, ‘I want to be sexy,’ so, out went the plaits and in went the waves.”
For MET Ball in May, they gave her a slicked bob with a shiny twist: a gold streak of glitter down the parting of her hair. “We’re working on looks that are fresh with just a little detail, it doesn’t have to be loud,” says Appleton. “Because the dress was gold and there was a lot going on, her hair had to be really simple.”

It’s no secret that one of Ora’s beauty inspirations is Gwen Stefani, so for Fashion Rocks in September, the pair paid tribute to the singer’s early style. “This was a little bit edgy, but Rita’s not afraid to stand out in a crowd,” says Appleton, adding, “the dress was black and simple and we thought, ‘we could kill it with slicked back hair!’ But it evolved into this mohawk bun punk moment.”
As for Ora’s other geometric bun at the American Music Awards in November, Appleton reveals, “this was probably one of the most craziest times we’ve ever had together! After a 15-hour flight from Dubai to L.A., we’re still on the plane and we get a phone call saying Rita has to be on the red carpet in an hour. So, I ended up doing her hair in the car on the way.” To complement her bold yellow dress they chose a a classic top-knot “with a kick of difference,” that being the sharp angle of the ends of her hair, cut — in the car — to look resemble an origami shape. Even wilder was that Ora’s hair had been blue just a day earlier! Luckily the color was wash out, but “it was a mental moment,” Appleton recalls.

Lastly, for a KIIS FM Jingle Ball performance, the singer not only brightened up her blond hair, but added some killer fringe as well. “The shape of her bangs had this almost Cleopatra vibe, but obviously the platinum gave it a different feel,” Appleton says. “We cut them up and just rocked it.”
If one thing’s consistent with Ora, it’s her blonde color. “That’s her thing. I think that’s the one thing we tend to keep, and if it does change, it will literally be for a few days. It would be a color that rinses out, we always go back to the blonde,” says Appleton.
As for the best thing about working with the singer? “Rita’s so edgy, she’s not really afraid of changing or doing something different. I think that’s why people like her. She’s not fake. You’re always thinking, ‘What’s she gonna do next?'”
